Pet Medicines

Pet Medicines You'll Eventually Need

Think you can get by without ever buying pet medicines for your dog or cat? Think again! Every animal gets ill, and every pet needs something to help them fight off sickness and injury. Here are some pet medications you will eventually need.

Flea and Heart Worm Pet Medicines

Heart worms are introduced to animals by mosquitoes. From there, they invade the animal's heart. If heart worm is not treated, it can be fatal. Fleas also can bring disease. That's why pet medicines that fight off these diseases are so essential for your pet's long life. There are "flavor tabs" that can help prevent heart worm. There are shampoos, washes and collars that help fight fleas.

Comfort Pet Medications

Pets get allergies just like people do. These cause itchiness and irritation of skin. Fortunately, there are inexpensive pet medicines that are effective at fighting allergies. Atopica, for instance, is a type of cyclosporine which targets immune cells that cause allergic reactions in pets. Other allergy-fighting pet medicines are available, too.

Also in the category of comfort meds: medicine to relieve joint pain. Vets and pet-owners are beginning now to give their animals nutritional supplements. These pet medicines help to promote the animal's bone structure and support their joint mobility.

And finally, there's motion sickness medication. Hey, people have Dramamine, so why not something for your pet? Many pet owners frequently take their dogs especially out in the car with them. Many dogs, like people, also get car sick. The good news is that there are pet medicines that can help with this. One of the best is Cerenia, a tablet which provides a soothing solution that eases the motion sickness. Other good motion sickness medication is Chlorpheniramine. This is a medicine which induces drowsiness in the pooch, so that he can relax during the trip. This one is also a good mild tranquilizer.

Emergency Medications

Antibiotics are used to fight off infectious diseases and bacteria. These work the same way that they work in humans. That is, dead bacteria are introduced into the animal's system to trigger their immune systems.

Older dogs and cats sometimes develop kidney disease, which is sometimes fatal. It almost always requires immediate treatment. Oral pet medicines like Calcitriol are prescribed for this condition, as well as for low calcium levels.

Behavioral Medications

It's probably no shock to realize that pets sometimes are nervous. Some are more nervous than others, however, and require special help. Fortunately, there are anxiety pet medicines that can help. One that vets frequently recommend is Amitriptyline. This is an antidepressant which addresses various emotional issues such as anxiety, and also urine spraying. Your vet will likely recommend that you administer this drug to your pet in conjunction with special behavior modification training.

There are, of course, many other pet meds which will come in handy for your particular furry friend. These are special prescriptions, though, that you should discuss with your veterinarian, so you can always know what to have in your dog or cat's first aid kit.
